Glenn Hutchinson, Ph.D.
Licensed Psychologist and Founder of Psyc.TV
Dr. Hutchinson started Psyc.TV to provide clinically-relevant, evidence-based continuing education to therapists. In his own clinical work, Dr. Hutchinson specializes in the treatment of individuals who exhibit sexually compulsive behaviors. During the current workshop, Dr. Hutchinson will clarify the facts and fictions surrounding the emotionally-laden topic of sexual addictions.
Jim Rilling, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Departments of Psychiatry & Anthropology, Emory University
Dr. Rilling is one of the nation's leading experts in the use of fMRI to investigate the neural bases of human social decision-making. He has also conducted extensive research on the brain's reward systems as well as the roles of oxytocin and vasopressin, neuropeptides implicated in sexual behavior and attachment.
A "Sex Addict"
There is nothing like a first-hand account. A recovering individual with an extensive history of sex addiction will present an account of his struggle with sex addiction as well as the intervention that enabled him to gain control over it.
A FEW OF THE QUESTIONS THAT WILL BE ADDRESSED:
Is sex addiction a fad diagnosis?
We become addicted to drugs like cocaine and alcohol when these substances co-opt the body's natural reward systems. Can a person develop an addiction to the primary reinforcer (i.e., sex) that our reward systems evolved to sustain?
What kinds of sexual behavior patterns have led clinicians to use the term "sex addiction"? What is the range of behaviors to which the term is applied? Is there a better term for out-of-control sexual behaviors? Does it matter what we call it?
What do we know about the causes of out-of-control sexual behavior? What have we learned from brain imaging? Does childhood sexual abuse play a role?
Do we know how common (i.e., prevalence rate) these problems are? Has the prevalence increased during recent years?
Are these difficulties co-morbid with other addictions or other disorders?
Problematic sexual behavior occurs far more frequently in men than women. Is the sex difference due to acculturation or profound differences in the evolved sexual psychologies of men and women?
Do you have clients whose sexual behavior is out of control but you don't know it? This is not uncommon in marital therapy. Learn how to determine whether one partner's sexual behaviors are interfering with your attemtps to help.
The program will begin promptly at 1pm and conclude at 4:15pm. (Registration begins at 12:15 pm.) 3 hours of CE credit are offered for this program.
